Meeting Stop Motion Legend Ray Harryhausen

Last night at the MGLA meeting here in Los Angeles stop motion legend Ray Harryhausen presented. It was really amazing to meet someone who more or less invented stop motion animation.

Harryhausen was responsible for the stop motion animation in films such as Clash of the Titans, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, and One Million Years B.C. Even though many of these films feel a little campy now, at the time they were cutting edge.

He revealed a lot of things that I didn’t know about his process such as he almost always worked alone, which is really astounding considering the complexity of his animation. He also said that 90% of his work was done in one take, another mind blower.

The real reason he was in town was to promote his book The Art Of Ray Harryhausen, of course I got my copy signed. The book shows a lot of his pre-production sketches and photos of his models. It’s pretty dense and very visually appealing.

Definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet a Hollywood legend.
