MAMP Video Tutorial Now Available

I’ve added a MAMP video tutorial that gives you a more advanced look at the setting up and configuring the MAMP application. I take you through the MAMP preferences window, hopefully answering your questions along the way.

I go through how I use MAMP together with WordPress. I hope this gives you a few ideas on how you can use it as well. I tried to answer as many questions as I could, however I’m sure I just stirred up some more so please leave your questions or comments.

Where’s the password? BTW the MAMP download doesn’t work for me at all. Tried going in and changin code as per several commenters suggestions. Looking over posts on the MAMP site it appears I’m not the only one. The widget does’t work even with Tiger (for me at least) there’s a code fix but that doesn’t seem to work either. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!!

    Dear Michael,
I am installing MAMP on my MAC. I get all the way to the WordPress install step. When I click on install.php to install WordPress all that happens is Dreamweaver8 opens up the file install.php and WordPress does not get installed. What do I do in order to get past this step in the set up?
    Thanks alot,

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
i have been at this for HOURS!!!! i cant get past this mesage!!!

    “Can’t select database

We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the wordpress database.

    Are you sure it exists?
On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the problem?
If you don’t know how to setup a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.”

    WAHT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?
    HELP!

    thx

    Hi,
I’ve installed MAMP and WP successfully on my Mac, but no MAMP/WP/Mac web tutorial goes past the install and open it in the WP admin console part. I’m able to view my local site through the WP admin console, but can’t seem to get Dreamweaver’s Manage site settings correct in order to view each separate .php file in a browser or see code edits as i go. The Preview in browser menu option won’t work because it says my URL isn’t valid and can’t be loaded. I also don’t know how to test database, etc. but was hoping someone could at least look at my info below and see if the info entered makes sense for the items listed. Please?

Below, I’ve typed in my Mangage Sites edits window settings in Dreamweaver:

    **Local Info window:**
    Local Root folder: Macintosh HD:Applications:MAMP:htdocs:wordpress:
    (followed a tutorial on this)

    Links relative to: Site root
    HTTP address: http://localhost:8888/wordpress/

(A wp test theme site shows up here fine, but I’m not familiar with the site root setting. How do i get the links in my local site code not to show the full path [img src="http://localhost:8888/wordpress/images/header_1.jpg"] , but only show [/images/header_1.jpg etc.? I’m pretty sure I’m supposed to use site root this time instead of relative to document, but it adds the full URL paths to my links, which isn’t what I’d want)

    **Remote Info window:**
    Access: Local/Network
    Remote folder: Macintosh HD:Applications:MAMP:htdocs:wordpress:

(do i go deeper into my :wp-content:themes: folder or stop here?)

    **Testing Server window:**
    Server Model: PHP MySQL
    Access: Local/Network
    Testing server folder: Macintosh HD:Applications:MAMP:db:mysql:wordpress:

(I have no idea if this is the right path. Do i stop here? Also, what is the URL prefix link below? The Mac uses “:” instead of “/” when i browse for the testing server. I don’t know what the URL for it would be then.)

    URL Prefix: http://Macintosh HD/

(With my info listed above, do I touch this one? The Dreamweaver note says the URL Prefix is the location of the site’s root folder on the application server. do i edit it to something??)

I’d really appreciate any info, thanks!

    Hello,

Just found Flashlinks do not work in httdocs. Next question is: Flash is’nt compatible?

thanks bro, i was trying to set up mamp and could not get the testing file extensions in dreamweaver right. The part where you said localhost:8888 was like www it made total sense and was able to get the file path right and all is right as rain and i can start using mamp to mess with a drupal site and do my php/mysql certifications in.

Useless. I could figure out most of that stuff myself. What is missing (typical) is the navigation, structure and jargon to get to the place where a user can find the answer to 2+2. What is the effect of omitting an item of info that the installatation requires? Why? Does the system tell you what item caused it to stumble? The usual answers to such questions are “Huh?” at best, crash at worst.
Open sesame instructions are a pain in the ass.

Jac – My tutorial on how to install MAMP should get you started. Good luck.

Well, all worked for me in a jiffy! Splendid. It was really plug-and-play… Now comes the hardest part: fully grasp what WordPress can do for me and my clients. Thanks for the tutorial!

Let me see, so far, in an effort to ‘learn’ how to build dynamic website over the past few years, I have, in no particular order:
    purchased hosting services
    Switched to Macs
    Purchased Adobe CS3 for Macs
Learned HTML and build several static webites
    Reviewed Javascript and php scripting
    Downloaded and installed MAMP
    Scoured the internet for help
The above list seems to be the things I have done ‘right’ and does not include ALL the things I have done ‘wrong’
And I am still lost. I feel like I am trying to become a computer programmer, but I know that I just want to be a website programmer at best, but I don’t think even that is called programming.

At this point all I ‘think’ I need is a tutorial that walks me through building a very simple mysql database (could I possible HAVE TO use WordPress or mambo, if so; why?*^&!) that I can manipulate with Dreamweaver. But what I find so strange is that after all my effort, I still don’t ‘know’ what I should be doing next, cause if what I ‘think’ is right, then why can’t I find the answers? Ho hum, must keep plugging away. Good luck to the many others who I know are out there to, and many thanks to those who said anything meaningful to me, that helped me get a little closer to my holy grail; don’t know why stakeholders like Adobe, MAMP, mysql, Mac, and Apache don’t do more; someone is dumb, and I ain’t saying it ain’t me.

Thanks for the great tutorial, would love a step by step guide on how you transfer one of those working sites from mamp to a hosted server. Having some issues. Have wordpress working locally, but having trouble seeing the same pages when I go live.

    Thanks!!

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for the free training video about MAMP. I have it in my Mac, and I’m using it to test Joomla sites. I have found that Joomla runs way better in MAMP than in any live hosting like from godaddy.com. In MAMP, once I upload a template, I can see exactily all the modules, menus, sections and articles I see in the template as it was created, then I can edit content in Joomla. Of course, the final goal is to have a site live online. My question is: How can I upload my site from MAMP to a hosting server (like from godaddy.com) once my site is edited and running good in MAMP?

    Thanks again!

Alain, interested to learn whether you ever found any resources to help you with your question at the and of your post : “My question is: How can I upload my site from MAMP to a hosting server (like from godaddy.com) once my site is edited and running good in MAMP?”

If so, can you share? I’m about to upload site from local MAMP server to shared hosting and have no idea which files need to be edited.

    Best,
    David
